Austria-Hungary sets World War I in motion by declaring war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. During the second half of the war, the various nationalities within the Empire press for national autonomy; their programs and claims often overlap and conflict. After the defeat of Austria-Hungary on November 2, 1918, its territories are divided among newly independent Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Yugoslavia, as well as Italy. (en-US)
