Ebensee (Austria : campo di concentramento) CercaDefinizione
Ebensee, a satellite camp of Mauthausen, opened November 18, 1943. The German code name for the camp was "SS Arbeitslager Zement." Located in upper Austria at the foot of the Alps, the camp housed prisoners forced to labor in tunnel construction for a rocket-research center. Prisoners from Ebensee were forced to work for several firms: Solvay Kalksteinbergwerke, Grossdeutscher Schachtbau, Deutscher Bergbau Hermann-Göring, Nibelungen Werke GmbH, Siemens-Bau-Union to name a few. At one point, Ebensee housed over 18,000 prisoners. Ebensee commandants were SS-Obersturmführer Otto Riemer (November 1943-May 1944) and SS-Hauptsturmführer Anton Ganz (May 1944-May 1945). Ebensee's prisoners included Russian, Yugoslavian, and French civilians. Jews arrived in Ebensee in early June 1944. As the population increased, conditions worsened and the mortality rate rose. Approximately 11,000 people died at Ebensee during its operation. Forced labor ended April 30, 1945 when most of the prisoners were released. On May 6, 1945, American troops liberated the camp.
