Definition:
The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) operated a Jewish displaced persons camp established by the United States Army in Föhrenwald, Germany, following World War II. Jewish displaced persons began to be housed in Föhrenwald in June 1945. The camp had extensive facilities including schools, synagogues, and kibbutzim operated by a number of Jewish organizations. The Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (ORT) also offered vocational courses in the camp. Föhrenwald was assigned to the 5th District-Munich Region of the American occupied zone in October 1947 and District 1-Bavaria in October 1948. The Föhrenwald area was supervised by UNRRA Area Team-1065 in June 1947. On December 1, 1951, the German administration took over operation of the camp until its closing in 1957. (en-US)
