Definizione
The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) operated a displaced persons camp in Belsen, Germany, (near the site of the former Bergen-Belsen concentration camp) following World War II. The camp was located in the British occupied zone of Germany. The British Armed Forces originally established and operated the camp under the name of Hohne (though the camp's population insisted on it being called Belsen or Bergen-Belsen). In November 1945, part of the camp housed exclusively Jewish displaced persons. As the largest displaced persons camp in Germany, Belsen served as a center for Jewish political, social, and cultural activities. British officials did not allow free immigration from the camp until 1949. In the early 1950's the Belsen camp had a very small population and by August 1951 all displaced persons had moved out of the camp; most of them immigrating to Israel. (en-US)
