History:
Algeria became a French colony by 1847 and the Jewish community, living mostly in Algiers, Oran, and Constantine, dated back to the Roman Empire, with their numbers increased by the Jews exiled from Spain. The Allies occupied Algeria after November 1942 and Algerian Jews were active in the resistance. Algeria gained its independence from France in July 1962.
