Definizione

Location: North African coast, bordered in 2000 by the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Chad, Sudan, and Niger. Capital city: Tripoli History: Tripoli had been under Ottoman rule since the 16th century with the other North African countries. Italy began its occupation of Libya during the Turko-Italian war of 1911 and gained control of most of the country by 1914. Cyrenaica, Fazzan, and Tripolitania became the Italian colony of Libya in 1934. After the Allied military victory in North Africa in May 1943, Libya was administered jointly by the British and the French and then by the United Nations in 1949. Libya gained independence from Italy in December 1951. (en-US)
