Years before WWII Italian authorities established a prison and holding facility on the small volcanic island of Ustica. This 9 sqkm island, located in the Mediterranean Sea approximately 40 km. NW of Sicily and NNW of the city of Palermo. The island belonged in 1939 to the province of Palermo. Initially prominent socialist and communist persons were incarcerated on Ustica, including Antonio Gramsci the secretary general of the Italian Communist party. (en-US)
