Patmos is an island in the Dodecanese Archipelago. The island lies in the Aegean Sea, south of Samos island. As part of the Dodecanese group of islands it belonged to Ottoman Empire up to 1912. Italy occupied the Dodecanese islands after she defeated the Ottoman Empire in Libya in 1911. Italy held the islands until 1945. In 1947 Patmos, together with the other islands of the archipelago, was passed to Greece. (en-US)
