The island of Sardinia lies to the west of the Italian peninsula and south of the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean sea. It has three provinces: Sassari, Nuoro, and Cagliari. The king of Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel II, was proclaimed the king of Italy in 1861. After the war it became an autonomous state in Italy. (en-US)
