Situated on the Tiber River, Regina Coeli was the main prison in Rome, Italy. From July 1940 to September 1943 it was used by the Italian police to imprison political and Jewish prisoners. After September 1943, it was used by the SS as a transit place for Jews who were to be deported from Rome to Fossoli and other camps. (en-US)
