Definizione

On October 29, 1964, the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar renamed itself the United Republic of Tanzania. Tanzania also included the island of Mafia. Julius Nyere was the first president and reelected twice. Nyere developed an economic and policy plan called the Arusha Declaration to develop Tanzania. TANU continued to be the only major political party until 1977 when it merged with the Afro-Shirazi party as the Party of the Revolution. During the 1970s, Tanzania fought a border war with Uganda and Tanzanian armed forces invaded Uganda to oust the dictator Idi Amin in 1979. Nyere resigned in 1985 after failing to fulfill the plans laid down by the Arusha Declaration and Ali Hassan Mwinyi became president. In the 1990s, Tanzania became a multiparty government and became a destination for Hutu refugees and guerillas fighting civil wars in neighboring Rwanda and Burundi. Beginning in January 1997, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, trials of Hutus involved in the genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda, took place in Arusha, Tanzania. (en-US)
