Definizione

After the defeat of the Axis forces in November 1943 and the end of the war in May 1945, Libya was administered by a joint Anglo-French military government. In 1949, it came under United Nations jurisdiction. On December 24, 1951, Libya gained its full independence from Italy as the United Kingdom of Libya, ruled by King Idris I. Libya joined the Arab League in 1953 and most Italian colonists left the country by 1964. In September 1969, a military coup led by Muammar al-Qaddafi took place. Qaddafi deposed of the king, appointed himself prime minister, and created as the governing body the Revolutionary Command Council (RCC). Libya became a Pan-Arab, Muslim republic and was renamed the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. After severing ties with the US and England, and opposed against Israel and Western influences, Qaddafi's government supported various guerilla actions in Africa and in the world. Libya's relations with the US worsened as it was believed to be the alleged headquarters for worldwide terrorist activity, resulting in several incidents such as the US bombing of Tripoli in 1986 and US and UN sanctions against Libya in 1992.
