Definizione

Born in Sotto il Monte, Italy in 1881, Angelo Roncalli served as Pope John XXIII of the Roman Catholic Church from 1958 to 1963. His reign was marked by a informal personal style and changes in church after he inaugurated the Vatican II Council. Roncalli attended seminary in Rome and served as a priest in World War I and continued to be a priest in Bergamo. From 1925 to 1935 he served as an archbishop as the apostolic visitor to Bulgaria. During World War II, he was the apostolic visitor in Turkey. In 1944, Roncalli was appointed papal nuncio in the newly liberated France. After his death in 1963, the church began proceedings for John XXIII's canonization. (en-US)
