Definizione

Location: On the Anatolian peninsula between southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, bordered in 2000 by Iraq, Syria, Greece, Bulgaria, Armenia, Georgia, the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. Capital city : Ankara History: The site of ancient Anatolian and Hittite cultures, Turkey was the center of the Ottoman Empire from the 13th century until 1918. After WWI, the nationalist movement was led by Mustafa Kemal (Kemal Atatürk) and the modern state of Turkey was created in October 1923. A brief war was fought with Greece from 1921 to 1922. During the Atatürk's administration Turkey underwent rapid modernization and westernization. Under President Inönü, Turkey remained neutral during most of WWII, and declared war of Germany and Japan in February 1945. Turkey received economic aid from the U.S. after the war and had conflicts with Greece over Cyprus. (en-US)
