Scotland occupies the northern part of the island of Great Britain and is a political unit of the United Kingdom along with Great Britain, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The capital city is Edinburgh. Other major cities are Glasgow, Dundee, and Aberdeen. Scotland also includes island groups such as the Hebrides, the Orkneys, and the Shetlands. Often in conflict with England for autonomy in the medieval era, Scotland was united with England under James I in 1603. (en-US)
