Definition: North Holland is a province in northwest Netherlands. The capital city is Haarlem. The province includes the West Frisian island of Texel. The mainland portion of the province is a peninsula bounded by the North Sea on the west, the Waddenzee on the north, the Ijsselmeer on the east, and the provinces of South Holland and Utrecht on the south. Amsterdam is the chief commercial center. Other important cities include Haarlem, Ijmuiden, Zaandam, Alkmaar, Helder, and Hilversum. The province was founded in 1840 when Holland was divided into North Holland and South Holland. (en-US)
