Definizione

Location: Northeastern United States, in the mid-Atlantic region, bordered in 2000 by Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and West Virginia. Capital City: Harrisburg History: The area of Pennsylvania was inhabited by Algonquian-speaking tribes and then colonized by the English, Dutch, and the Swedes in the 1600s. In 1681 William Penn established the Quaker colony in Philadelphia. Other groups to settle in Pennsylvania included Germans (Mennonites, Amish, and Moravians) who retained many of their traditional ways and Scots-Irish who settled in the western frontier. One of the original 13 colonies, Pennsylvania declared statehood in 1776, and was the site of the 1st and 2nd Continental Congresses and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. During the Civil War, Pennsylvania was pro-Union and the site of the Gettysburg campaign. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Pennsylvania emerged as a leading state in oil production, mining, and industry. (en-US)
