Anhalt (Germania : State) CercaDefinizione
Capital city: Dessau
Situated in central Germany, Anhalt formed an almost complete enclave within the Prussian province of Saxony. It was bordered by the Prussian province of Brandenburg to the northeast.
Anhalt fell within the Soviet occupation zone after World War II, and consequently it became part of the German Democratic Republic. It was merged with Saxony into a new state called Saxony-Anhalt. Saxony-Anhalt was a state of the GDR from 1949 until 1952, when the territory of Anhalt was divided between the districts of Magdeburg and Halle. Upon the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, Saxony-Anhalt was reconstituted a state and given back the district of Magdeburg, most of the district of Halle, and a small part of the district of Cottbus.
