Definizione

The Chetniks were a Serbian nationalist guerilla force made up of army and gendermerie splinter groups. They formed during World War II as a resistance group against Axis invaders and Croatian collaborators. While initially fragmented, the Chetniks regrouped and then rallied to the leadership and command of Colonel Dragoljub (Draza) Mihailovic. Under Mihailovic the Chetniks carried out successful guerilla campaigns against the Germans with improbable success. However, much of the Chetniks resources in Yugoslavia were not employed against the Axis powers but against the communist partisans led by Marshal Tito. In 1944, the Allies switched their support from the Chetniks to Tito's partisans. Draza Mihailovic was captured by the partisans on March 13, 1946. He was charged with treason and collaboration with Germans and executed in Belgrade in 1946. (en-US)
