Abbey, in Latium, central Italy, overlooking the town of Cassino. The abbey was founded in 529 by St. Benedict of Nursia.
The abbey was completely destroyed by concentrated Allied aerial bombardments in 1944. Members of the German garrison, who had been using the abbey as a fortress, survived the bombing by taking shelter in previously dug caves, but the buildings were flattened and most of their art treasures destroyed. The monastery was rebuilt after World War II. (en-US)
