Definizione

A French Protectorate at the end of World War II, Morocco became independence on March 2, 1956. Sultan Muhammed V ruled the country until his death in February 1961, and was succeeded by his son, Hassan II. Despite the prominence of the Jewish community in Moroccan history and society, the independent nation allied itself with the Arab states on the Palestine issue. After the signing of the Madrid Accords on November 14, 1975, Morocco was granted joint sovereignty with Mauritania over the Western Sahara, the former Rio de Oro. Morocco's Jewish population immigrated to the state of Israel in 1948, leaving approximately 42,000 by 1968. The military attempted a coup in 1971 but was unsuccessful in toppling the monarchy. Guerilla units in the Western Sahara campaign against Moroccan control of the region. (en-US)
