The island of Rhodes lies in the southern Sporades, in the southeastern Aegean Sea off the southwestern coast of Turkey, in the Dodecanese group of islands. It is 45 miles long by 22 miles wide (at its widest) and has a mountain range extending the length of the island, the highest point being Mount Attairo (3,986 feet). Exports are fruit, vegetables, and wine. Rhodes was the chief island of Italian Aegean Islands from 1912 untIl 1945. It was passed to Greece in 1947. (en-US)
