Coordinates: 41º29'N 13º49'E Nearest big city: 75 mi ESE of Rome 1930 Province: Frosinone 1939 Region: Latium At end of 1943 both town and Benedictine abbey of Monte Cassino, on a near by hill, were key defencse points of Germans blocking Allied advance to Rome. Despite repeated, concentrated ground attacks startedd in Jan 1944, the Allied attempt to divert German troops from here by landings at Anzio, and virtual destruciton of town and abbey by air and artillery bombing, the German positions held out until May 18, 1944. Reconstruciton of part of the town was begun in 1945. Near by are British and Polish military cemetaries. (en-US)
