Definizione

Definition: At the end of World War I the "National Schism" divides supporters of Greece's King Constantine I and those of his prime minister, Venizélos. King Constantine abdicates his throne in 1922 as a military junta, headed by Venizélos, seizes power. The Hellenic Republic is declared on May 1, 1924. It is plagued by political instability. The monarchy is restored on November 25, 1935 when Constantine's son, King George II, returns. General Ionnis Metaxas becomes prime minister in 1936. For the next four and a half years Metaxas runs a paternalistic dictatorial government backed by the army and tolerated by the king. Like Hitler and Mussolini, Metaxas despises parliamentary democracy, liberalism, and communism. However, the Metaxas regime does not seek an alliance with Germany or Italy and does not promote their ideas of racism. With the support of the king, Metaxas maintains the country's alignment with Britain. At the outbreak of World War II, 77,000 Jews live in Greece. (en-US)
