An 1867 constitutional amendment (called the Ausgleich) unifies Habsburg lands in Austria and Hungary. The new European state, Austria-Hungary exists under a dual monarchy. After the World War I defeat of Austria-Hungary on November 2, 1918 (Treaty of St. Germain), its territories are divided among the newly independent states of Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Yugoslavia, as well as Italy. In addition, the treaty forbids union with Germany. (en-US)
