Definizione

Definition: Austria moves from an independent Republic (1918-1932) to an annexed territory of Germany (March 13, 1938). At the end of World War I Austria signs the Treaty of St. Germain (September 10, 1919). This treaty requires Austria's repayment of war reparations, limits the standing army, separates Austria and Hungary into independent nations, redistributes land, and bans a union with Germany. Despite the presence of an anti-Nazi government, antisemitism grows and Nazis make political gains in the years leading up to the Anschluss. After Hitler and Mussolini form an alliance in 1936, Austria signs a treaty with Germany (July 11, 1936) in which Germany promises to respect Austrian sovereignty in exchange for Austria's acknowledgment of itself as "a German state." Hitler enters Austria with the German army on March 12, 1938. A Nazi government, headed by Arthur Seyss-Inquart, is established in Austria. (en-US)
