Egitto 1942 CercaDefinizione
In January 1942, bread shortages in Cairo led to attacks on bakeries. The German armed forces led by Erwin Rommel invaded Egypt in the spring and summer, but the British victory at El Alamein in November pushed the Axis forces out. The British demanded support from King Farouk at the risk of deposition. Farouk conceded and the Wafd party assumed control of the government led by pro-British prime minister Mustafa al-Nahhas. Despite this, Egyptian antagonism toward the British and pro-Axis sentiments remained until the end of the year. (en-US)
