Buvovina (Romania : Province)   Cerca

Definizione

Romanian province formed from the historic region of Bukovina. Bukovina was the historical nucleus of the principality of Moldavia, which had its first capital Suceava, in Bukovina. Ceded (1775) by Ottoman Empire to Austria, Bukovina was initially made a district of Galicia, but in 1848 became an autonomous crownland ranking as a titular duchy. In November 1918 Romania occupied Bukovina. Although local Ukrainians had tried to incorporate their districts in northern Bukovina into the Western Ukrainian National Republic, Romanian forces gained control over the whole province. The Treaty of Saint-Germain (1919) approved the incorporation of Bukovina into the Romanian state. In June 1940 the USSR annexed the northern part of Bukovina, but Romania temporarily regained this territory as Germany's ally after the latter had invaded the USSR in June 1941. Soviet troops retook Bukovina in 1944. In accordance with the post-WWII peace settlements northern Bukovina became part of the Ukrainian SSR, excluding the Suceava, Câmpu-Lung, and Radauti counties. The province of Bukovina bordered with the provinces of Basarabia and Moldova to the southeast, with Transylvania to the south, with Crisana-Maramures to the west and with Poland to the north. Capital: Cernauti The province of Bukovina consisted of five counties: Câmpu-Lung, Cernauti, Radauti, Storojinet, and Suceava. In June 1940, the USSR annexed the northern portion of Bukovina consisted of Cernauti and Storojinet counties.
