Romanian province, which mainly covered the territory of historic western Moldova. Moldova was one of two principalities (the other was Walachia) whose unification led to the creation of the modern Romanian state first in 1861 and finally in 1878. Situated between two rivers, the Prut and the Dniester, the province of Moldova was bounded by Muntenia on the southwest, by Transylvania on the west, by Bukovina on the northwest, and by Basarabia on the east.

The province of Moldova consisted of 13 counties: Bacau, Baia, Botosani, Covurlui, Dorohoi, Falciu, Iasi, Neamt, Putna, Roman, Tecuci, Tutova, and Vaslui. (en-US)
