Lódz (Polonia : Voivodship) CercaDefinizione
The Lódz voivdoship was located in western Poland and shared a border with Germany between the wars. The area had belonged to the Russian empire after 1815 and then was included in the republic of Poland in 1918 with the capital city of Lódz, a site for textile manufacturing. Other major cities included Piotrkow Trybulnalski, Tomaszow Mazowieckie, and Pabiance. Shortly before WWII, the voivodship boundaries were re-drawn to incorporate parts of the Kielce, Warsaw, and Poznan voivodships. The German armed forces occupied the Lódz voivodship, renaming it the Warthegau (Wartheland) and renamed the city of Lódz Litzmannstadt. The city had been home to a sizable Jewish population since the nineteenth century and approximately 30% perished in the Holocaust. After the war, most of the area remained in a new voidvodship of the same name.
