On January 17, 1945, Soviet troops capture Warsaw. Between February 13 and 14, the German city of Dresden is reduced to rubble by Allied fire-bombing. At the beginning of March, the western Allies take Cologne and establish a bridge across the Rhine at Remagen. At the end of the month, the Soviets capture Danzig. On April 12, 1945, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt dies and is succeeded by Vice President Harry S. Truman. Four days later,
Soviet troops begin their final attack on Berlin, and the Americans enter Nuremberg. On April 29, the U.S. 7th Army liberates Dachau. The next day, Hitler commits suicide in his bunker in Berlin. The terms of the unconditional surrender are signed by the Germans on May 8, 1945. (en-US)
