Definizione

During WWII, the kingdom of Egypt was a location for military bases and facilities for Britain and the site of famous battles in the desert campaign such as El Alamein. The Egyptian administration led by King Farouk was reluctant in providing Britain with support, expecting an Axis victory. In 1940 the British pressured the King to dismiss his prime minister, Ali Mahir, and to appoint a more cooperative government. From October 1942 to January 1943, the Allies began the campaign to drive the Axis out of Egypt at the battle of El Alamein. In 1944 the Egyptian government under Ahmad Mahir cooperated more with the British until Mahir's assassination in February 1945, when Egypt formally declared of war on Germany and Japan. (en-US)
