Definition:
Vélodrome d'Hiver in Paris was an indoor sports stadium used for the temporary internment of Jews arrested by the French municipal police. Jewish refugees were interned at the Vélodrome d'Hiver in 1939 (at the beginning of World War II). Foreign-born women were interned at the stadium in May 1940. In July 1942, thousands of Jews (4,000 children) were rounded up and assembled at the Vélodrome d'Hiver and then deported to camps at Compiégne, Beaune-la-Rolande, Pithiviers and Drancy. (en-US)
