Definizione

Location: Mountainous northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent, bordered in 2000 by India, Afghanistan, and Iran. Capital city: Islamabad History: Incorporated into England's colonialization of India in 1857, the area that was later known as Pakistan became the center of Indian's Muslim population and was the site of numerous Hindu-Muslim conflicts. A group of Indian Muslim students in England advocated the creation of a separate Muslim state named Pakistan in 1930. The Muslim League, which had been created in 1906, gained momentum under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah during WWII. Pakistan became a separate state and gained its independence from England in August 1947. The new geopolitical entity was divided into West and East Pakistan, located on NW and NE corners of India. In 1974, East Pakistan broke away to form the independent republic of Bangladesh, resulting in a civil war and war with India. West Pakistani premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto recognized the independence of Bangladesh in 1974. (en-US)
