In May 1944 the Jews of Baja were forced by the Hungarian authorities into a deportation center established in an empty warehouse. Later they were transferred to a nearby farm and from there to the Békéscsaba ghetto. After four days they were split into two groups: 100 were deported to Strasshof in Austria and 22 were deported to Auschwitz. A total of 89 Jews from Baja returned after the war. (en-US)
