Location: In the middle of the North American continent, bordered in 2000 by Canada and Mexico. Capital city: Washington, D.C. History: The United States participated in WWI in 1917, securing victory for the Allies. After the prosperity of the 1920s, the U.S. economy was put into a state of crisis during the Great Depression of the 1930s. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the U.S. entered WWII and again secured an Allied Victory. Along with the USSR, the U.S. emerged from the war as a major world power.
