Definition:
Capital city: Schleswig
Schleswig became a Danish duchy in the twelfth century, and it remained under Danish influence until it was forcibly annexed by Prussia. Holstein (created a duchy in 1474) was a member of the Holy Roman Empire and, after 1815, of the German Confederation, while Schleswig remained outside imperial or German jurisdiction. Denmark's attempts after 1846 to annex the two duchies led to the war of 1864. Austria and Prussia defeated Denmark, forcing her to relinquish Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg. Prussia annexed Holstein, Lauenburg, and Schleswig, from which the province of Schleswig-Holstein was constituted (1867, 1876). In 1920, in accordance with the Treaty of Versailles, a plebiscite was held in North Schleswig (north of Flensburg). The Danish majority voted for incorporation into Denmark.
During the Weimar Republic, the southern and central part of Schleswig-Holstein continued to be a province of Prussia. (en-US)
