Definizione

Carlos Saúl Menem, a Peronist, takes office on July 8, 1989. A convert to Catholicism from a Syrian Muslim family, Menem seeks friendly relations with Argentine Jewry. He also pardons soldiers condemned for human rights violations and allies himself with business and financial sectors to begin the privatization of state enterprises and introduce stringent economic regulations. In 1991, Menem becomes the first Argentine president to visit Israel. In March 1992, the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires is bombed, killing 29 people and wounding 252; on July 18, 1994, the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) building is bombed, resulting in 86 deaths and at least 120 wounded. This latter incident constitutes the most lethal attack against any diaspora Jewish community since the Holocaust. As of 1994, there are an estimated 208,000 Jews in Argentina. (en-US)
