Definizione

The overthrow of President Juan Perón is completed by September 23, 1955. The transition to military dictatorship is accompanied by an increase in antisemitic activities. The dictatorship seeks to restore constitutional government, and a Peronist-backed candidate, Arturo Frondizi, wins the 1958 presidency. Frondizi is the first Argentine president to appoint a Jew to a cabinet post. In 1960, the size of the Argentine Jewish community reaches its apex at 310,000. In a violation of Argentine sovereignity, the Israeli secret service abducts Adolf Eichmann in May 1960, and takes him to Israel to stand trial. The Argentine senate's September 1961 condemnation of antisemitism is not backed by any law-enforcement action. After March 1962 elections favorable to Peronists, the military withdraws support from Frondizi and establishes its own government. On June 28, 1962, Jewish commercial enterprises stage a nationwide strike to protest the government's inaction against spreading antisemitic violence. The candidate for the People's Radical Civic Union wins the 1963 elections. Attempts to outlaw antisemitic organizations in May 1963 and November 1964 fail to eradicate antisemitism. A military junta, which enjoys Peronist support, ousts the president and proclaims the Argentine Revolution on June 28, 1966. (en-US)
