Definizione

During World War II, Argentina serves as the base for German propaganda throughout Latin America until 1944. Argentina remains neutral for most of the war and enjoys economic prosperity. President Ramón S. Castillo (1940-1943) restores the conservative coalition, but military officers oust Castillo on June 4, 1943, and assume political control. This provides the foundation on which Colonel Juan Perón builds his political career. Germany sends Jews possessing Argentine documents or passports to Bergen-Belsen, but Argentina makes no concentrated effort to repatriate Argentine Jews in Germany or German-occupied regions. Argentina relinquishes neutrality on January 26, 1944. By 1945, Perón is vice president and minister of war. He declares war on Germany on March 25, 1945. Official figures for Jewish immigration between 1933 and 1945 are 24,488; the actual figure is probably closer to 40,000. (en-US)
