Definizione

During 1939, 4,000 Jews enter Brazil. This marks an increase in Jewish immigration, which prompts an antisemitic reaction. President Vargas' promise to the Vatican to admit 3,000 Catholic non-Aryans is largely blocked by regulations. According to the official census, the 1940 Jewish population of Brazil is 55,668, but the actual figure is much higher. A flurry of decrees during 1940 to 1942 restrict immigration. While almost 4,000 Jewish refugees arrive during 1940 and 1941, only 235 Jews enter Brazil legally between 1942 and 1945. Antisemitic propaganda appears in newpapers for a time, and is then halted. Brazil declares war on Germany and Italy on August 22, 1942, and sends troops to Italy in 1944. An opposition movement to Vargas' dictatorial power coalesces in 1944. (en-US)
