The Jewish population of Ecuador reaches its peak in 1950, with 4,000 persons. The postwar period is generally characterized by relatively free elections with two interludes of military government (1963-1966 and 1962-1979). The government returns to a constitutionally elected president on July 16, 1979. During the 1970s, Ecuador enjoys an oil boom, but suffers when oil prices fall during the 1980s. Currently, there are about 900 Jews in Ecuador. (en-US)
