Definizione

World War II begins on September 1, 1939. Based on perceived security concerns, the State Department restricts visa approvals. As a result, only 21,000 Jewish refugees, a mere 10% of the number permitted under existing quotas, enter the U.S. during the war years. Japan attacks Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Congress declares war on Japan on December 8, 1941. On December 11, Germany declares war on the U.S. and Congress adopts a resolution recognizing a state of war. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies on April 12, 1945, and Vice President Harry S. Truman is sworn in to office that same day. (en-US)
