Use when survivors discuss encounters with Italian police and security forces. (en-US)

Departments of state and local governments responsible for the maintenance of public order, safety, health, etc., in Italy. In the context of the Holocaust, Italian police and security forces played a key role in enforcing anti-Jewish policies and other repressive measures. There were other police forces besides the regular police in Italy. The Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (MVSN) was the political police of the Fascist party until the armistice in September 1943. In November 1943 the MSVN was replaced by the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana in the Italian Social Republic of nothern and central Italy. Also operating in the Social Republic were the so-called "Bande Nere," squads of militant fascists that assisted the police and SS in rounding up the Jews and capturing partisans. (en-US)
