Sátoraljaújhely (Ungheria : ghetto) CercaDefinizione
In April 1944 Hungarian authorities established a ghetto in the town of Sátoraljaújhely in Zemplén county, 221 kilometers (137 miles) northeast of Budapest , adjacent to the Czech border. The area designated as the ghetto was known as the "Gypsy" (Roma) quarter. The ghetto was surrounded with barbed wire and guarded by Hungarian gendarmes. A Jewish council, headed by Dr. Lajos Rosenberg and aided by a five-member Jewish police force, was appointed. Beginning on April 15, 1944, the Jews from twenty-four surrounding communities were forced into the Sátoraljaújhely ghetto. The ghetto soon contained approximately 15,000 Jews. The ghetto was evacuated between May 16 and June 3, 1944, when the Jews were deported to Auschwitz in four transports. (en-US)
