History:
An 1867 constitutional amendment, called the Ausgleich, unified Habsburg lands in Austria and Hungary. The new European state, Austria-Hungary, existed under a dual monarchy. After World War I, the Treaty of St. Germain (signed on September 10, 1919) divided the Austro-Hungarian Empire among the newly independent states of Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Yugoslavia, as well as Italy. In addition, the treaty forbade union with Germany. (en-US)
