With the onset of WWII, Romania declares neutrality. Relations with the USSR become difficult in the summer of 1940. The Red Army enters Bessarabia and northern Bukovina on June 28, 1940. On September 14, 1940, a "National-Iron-Guardist" State is declared. Jews are plagued by antisemitic terrorism and the confiscation of their property. On June 23, 1941, Romania invades the USSR. Thousands of Jews are sent to labor camps to Bessarabia in the summer of 1942. Romania fights against Germany and Hungary in 1944 and 1945. (en-US)
