Post-Communist democracy develops. On June 5, 1989, Solidarity-supported candidates win the majority in the Senate and in the Sejm. On August 22, 1989, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, a Solidarity movement activist, becomes the prime minister. On January 29, 1990, the Polish United Workers (Communist) party votes itself out of existence and reconstitutes itself as the Social Democratic party. On December 11, 1990, Lech Walesa wins the presidential election. In 1994, a socialist Alexander Kwasniewski wins the presidency. (en-US)
