Definizione

The Polish eastern boundary with the USSR and the Polish-German frontier along the Oder-Neisse line were set by August 2, 1945. In 1945, 25,000 Jews left Poland for refugee camps in Germany, Austria, and Italy. 136,000 Jews repatriated to Poland from the USSR in February-July 1946. Pogrom in Kielce took place on July 4, 1946, and accelerated the departure of Jews from Poland to the West. 150,000 Jews left Poland in 1946. On May 30, 1947, the Communist party won the majority of the parliament in a rigged election. From the end of the war to December 1948, nationalist forces represented by former members of the AK and the Polish government in exile struggled with the Soviet-appointed authorities such as the Polish Committee for National Liberation, PKWN, for political control of Poland. In December 1948 the communists established their hold by liquidating the other political parties during a unification congress. (en-US)
