Definition: The first large ghetto, in Lodz, is sealed off in May. The first prisoners arrive at the Auschwitz camp on May 29, 1940. By the latter half of the year, all the Jewish communities of Wartheland that had survived the mass deportations are sealed off in ghettos. The Warsaw ghetto is established on November 15. In the second half of 1940, about 50 forced labor camps for Jews are established in the Lublin district. Elsewhere in Poland, thousands of Jews are sent to forced labor camps. (en-US)
